In her new book, The Golden Hat, Kate Winslet compiles a collection of celebrity self portraits that have one thing in common: each of them is wearing a “magical” hat that represents their support for autism awareness.

Winslet is a known advocate for autism outreach and founded The Golden Hat Foundation for autism after being inspired by a subject in one of her films. The boy, Keli Thorsteinsson, lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism and composes poetry (which is featured in the book) as a hobby. One of his pieces titled “The Golden Hat” describes an autistic boy’s ability to communicate through a magical hat.

In The Golden Hat, Winslet’s celebrity friends share a personal statement about what their first words would be if they were suddenly able to communicate after years of silence. Celebrities featured include: Anna Wintour, Ben Stiller, Brigitte Lacombe, Christina Aguilera, David Souffan, Demi Moore, Don Cheadle, Elijah Wood, Ellen Page, Javier Bardem, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jude Law, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Laura Dern, Live Schreiber, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maria Sharapova, Marion Cottillard, Meryl Streep, Michael Kors, Naomi Watts, Pedro Almodovar, Peter Sarsgaard, and Ricky Gervais. Proceeds from the book will benefit Winslet’s Foundation.

The Golden Hat Foundation raises money to build specialized campuses that provide education, job training, social supports, recreation, and assisted living to people living with autism. The book is set to release next April.
