If Mrs. Obama was going to write a tell-all, this is how she would do it: fresh, original, and raw. But don’t think you’re in for some racy exposé of our President’s dealings behind the White House doors – this story tells of a life on a much greener side. In fact, the First Lady has penned her first book and the subject is on one that I didn’t even know existed: the White House garden.

American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities tells the story of the White House garden in an effort to encourage families to eat healthier. (And usually “healthier” is synonymous with “more expensive,” but apparently this book will explore food options that are both healthy and affordable.)

The 256-page cookbook will provide tips on starting your own garden, share Obama family recipes, and feature photographs of the White House garden and other community gardens around the country. Inspired by her daughters Sasha and Malia, Mrs. Obama followed in the footsteps of Eleanor Roosevelt and planted an edible garden on the South Lawn of the White House. (Don’t you just adore her traditional values?) And in another classy move… the First Lady didn’t take an advance on the book and will be donating all of the proceeds to a charity.

American Grown will be published in print and digital editions on April 10, 2012, but pre-orders are available on the Random House website.
